Dear Brooke Cudahy:

I have carefully considered your request to take more than 6.0 units of courses away from Queen’s during the 2023/2024 academic year. After reviewing your academic petition, I have decided the following:

As you know, Regulation 14.4 indicates that “[normally] the last two years of the Honours degree are taken in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s.” Due to the timeline of your extenuating circumstances and the support that you have received from your department, I will allow you to take a maximum of 18.0 units of 300-level ENGL courses at Athabasca University on a Letter of Permission during the 2023/2024 academic year.

I want you to know that this was a lenient decision as you have not completed ENGL 290 which is a pre-requisite for upper year ENGL courses, and a core requirement for your degree plan. Upon your return to in-person study, you will be expected to take ENGL 290 prior to any further upper year ENGL courses.

I want to remind you that on-campus students can enroll in online courses in SOLUS and so you are welcome to take electives through Queen’s during the 2024 Winter term along with Athabasca courses. Please know that students are allowed to take a maximum of 18.0 units per term including courses taken at other institutions.

You may now apply for a Letter of Permission through SOLUS. Note that official transcripts with final grades must be received by the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services office upon completion of the courses. Please keep in mind that you must achieve a minimum grade of C on each course taken on a Letter of Permission, unless stated otherwise.

I also suggest that you connect with the Faculty of Education to discuss your 2023/2024 PROF and PRAC requirements, if you haven’t done so already.

Finally, please be advised that you are allowed to complete a maximum of 57.0 transfer units toward your BA Honours degree (see Academic Regulation 16.1.3) including a maximum of 24.0 units toward your Major in English.

Sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
