Dear Ava:

I was sorry to read of the difficulties you outlined in your petition letter, and I am sorry for your loss. No doubt this was a difficult time for you and your family. I have carefully considered your request to waive the 21-day petition deadline and after reviewing your file, I have decided to grant that request.

Based on your circumstances and documentation, I will drop PHIL 153 (F 2022); CHEM 112, FILM 110, PSYC 100 (FW 2022/23); and FREN 107, GNDS 125 (W 2023) late due to the circumstances outlined. The grades in these courses will be changed to DR notations on your transcript which will subsequently increase your GPA so you will no longer be Required to Withdraw. You may resume your studies in January 2024 (Winter term) and can register in courses now for that term if you wish.

I have granted this petition based on the challenges you outlined as well as your documentation, but let me remind you that going forward, you should pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term and drop courses that you are behind in, or not achieving the grades you desire, by the week 8 drop date deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Ava, I strongly encourage reach out to Student Wellness Services (Student Wellness Services | Queen's University (queensu.ca)) who have support persons available that may be helpful to you as you manage your grief and ongoing health related challenges.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
