Dear Hannah:

I have carefully considered your petition to drop IDIS 373 (W23), HLTH 332 (S23), ANAT 315 and KNPE 363 (F23) after the academic deadline and for Aegrotat Standing in GLPH 271, PHAR 370 (W23) and KNPE 400 (F23). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:

To grant your request to drop IDIS 373 (W23), HLTH 332 (S23), ANAT 315 and KNPE 363 (F23) after the academic deadline due to the timeline and academic impacts of your extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. Your grades in these courses will be replaced by a DR notation on your transcript.

To deny your request for Aegrotat Standing in GLPH 271, PHAR 370 (W23) and KNPE 400 (F23) as the instructors of these courses reported that you did not meet the learning outcomes based on the work that was completed. Academic Petition and Appeal regulation 3.3.1.3. states that Aegrotat standing is reserved for a course in which a student who, because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, is unable to complete all the work of the class. At least 60 per cent of the work to be evaluated in the class must be completed. As part of the petition decision process, the instructor must assert that the student has met all of the course learning outcomes.

I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied and the information that I received from the instructors related to your grades in these courses.

I acknowledge that you weren’t able to complete GLPH 271, PHAR 370 (W23) and KNPE 400 (F23) due to the ongoing academics of your extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied and I am willing to offer you the following academic options:

I will allow you to drop GLPH 271 and PHAR 370 (W23) after the academic deadline. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 15 business days of receiving this letter. Please know that I cannot offer a late drop of KNPE 400 (F23) as you successfully passed this course.

Alternately, I will allow you an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in GLPH 271, PHAR 370 (W23) and KNPE 400 (F23) so that you can complete the outstanding work in each of these classes during the remainder of the current 2024 Winter term. Please know that

the deadline for the outstanding work must be completed before April 30, 2024. It is your responsibility to connect with each of these instructors to make these arrangements.

Going forward, it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
