I have carefully considered your request to waive the deadline related to the W22 and F22 terms, to drop ENGL 200, ENGL 218, HIST 223 (W23), ENGL 237, ENGL 277 and HIST 275 (F23). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To waive the deadline related to the W22 and F22 terms and to grant your request to drop ENGL 200, ENGL 218, HIST 223 (W23), ENGL 237, ENGL 277 and HIST 275 (F23) as the documentation that you supplied confirms the timeline, severity and academic impacts of extenuating circumstances. I will also allow you to drop ENGL 281, ENGL 290, and HIST 295 (F22) without having to submit a subsequent petition.
Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript.
To deny your requests for Credit Standing in PSYC 100 (FW21/22). I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter and the documentation that you supplied.
The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under "extenuating circumstances." The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I was happy to see that you reduced your course load for the 2024 Winter term and that you are being supported by Student Wellness Services (SWS). I have denied your request for Credit Standing in PSYC 100 (FW21/22) as neither your petition letter or documentation suggests any impacts to your academic ability/performance during the 2022 Winter term. If you are concerned about the impact that this course has on your GPA you may want to consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code both attempts will appear on your transcript but only the higher attempt will be included within your cumulative GPA.
Going forward, you should know that it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
