I have carefully considered your petition request for Credit Standing in ENGL 100, PSYC 100 (FW22/23), COMM 251, MATH 280, and STAT 263 (F23).
To grant your request for Credit Standing in in COMM 251, MATH 280, and STAT 263 (F23) due to the timeline of extenuating circumstances during the 2023 Fall term as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a CR notation on your transcript.
To deny your request for Credit Standing in ENGL 100, PSYC 100 (FW22/23). As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under "extenuating circumstances." The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied, the additional information that you supplied the Petitions Office via email, and your individual grades as provided by the instructors of these courses.
I acknowledge that you received news regarding your father’s health near the end of the 2023 Winter term and that you proceeded to complete ENGL 100 and PSYC 100 successfully. I do recognize that this news must have been difficult for you to receive so close to the exam period however I want you to know that academic impacts from an unexpected circumstance should be managed proactively by utilizing options such as academic consideration or accommodations. A student can request short term academic consideration if they need more time to complete a component or had to miss a class as a result of an illness or other personal circumstance. I have denied this part of your request as the documentation that you supplied doesn’t speak to the 2022/2023 academic year. I also see that you were able to achieve high grades in other courses during the Winter term and that you were able to successfully complete 9.0 units of courses during the subsequent 2023 Summer term to high standards despite the ongoing impacts of the circumstances.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
