I have carefully considered your request to waive the 1-Year Petition Deadline related to the 2022 Winter term. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 3.7.2. states that, "Exceptions to the petition and appeal deadlines can only be granted in cases where extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control render the student unable to submit a petition or appeal within the specified timeline. The student must be able to show that the extenuating circumstances were ongoing. The student must also be able to demonstrate that these circumstances prevented the student from acting between the time the original decision was received and the time at which the appeal was eventually initiated. An appeal of this type should include a presentation of the specific reasons for the delay and must include documents that support the reasons for this delay.”
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, your transcript, and the documentation that you supplied.
I acknowledge that you were not able to complete COMM 221, POLS 212, POLS 244 and POLS 262 (W22) due to an unexpected extenuating circumstance that occurred near the end of the term, as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. I have however denied this request as your petition did not demonstrate any extenuating circumstances beyond your control that prevented you from petitioning these courses within 1 year after the 2022 Winter term ended.
Rukaiya, I see that you are familiar with the Academic Petition option as you had submitted 2 petitions prior to the 2022 Winter term and one petition after. I also want you to know that information about academic options including what can be petitioned is available to students within the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Calendar each year.
Going forward, I recognize that you require 9.0 units of courses to complete your degree requirements and that you are not interested in returning to in-person classes in the 2024 Fall term. I would suggest that you consider taking your remaining electives through Arts and Science online at Queen’s University and applying for a Letter of Permission to take your final POLS course at another institution. Information about Letter of Permission can be found at queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/current-students/course-planning-and-options.
