Dear Mr. Mancuso:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop GEOL 106, PHYS P16, PHIL 115B and ECON 110B (W 2015) past the academic deadline, as well as waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1. I will deny your request to drop GEOL 106, PHYS P16, PHIL 115B and ECON 110B (W 2015) past the academic deadline. Your appeal did not provide enough evidence to conclude that there was a medical condition or other factors beyond your personal control that were severe enough to cause you to fail all of your winter term courses. The letter from Dr. Bauermann gives some good insight into the difficulties you faced over the year but doesn€™t provide enough evidence to warrant dropping courses past the academic deadline.
2. I will grant your request to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year. I recognize the fact that you indeed had a difficult transition to university, you now have a sound academic plan moving forward and you are seeking help to resolve your personal challenges. For these reasons I am confident that you will make a successful return, provided that you follow through with the plans you outlined in your letter. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.
It is my hope that you will continue to seek counselling over the next year and follow up with your doctor about the health-related challenges you faced to see if any medical treatment is required. I also hope that you follow through with Dr. Bauermann€™s recommendations to use the student resources available on campus that she explained to you. Should you find that you are continuing to have difficulties in your courses, please schedule an appointment to meet with an academic advisor as soon as possible so we can provide you with assistance and information.
Please read carefully the attached document to follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.
Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Health, Counselling and Disabilities Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
