I have carefully considered your request to waive the Petition Deadline related to the 2022 Fall and 2023 Winter terms as well as your request to drop BIOL 102, PHAR 100, PHIL 151 (S23) and BIOL 200 (W24). After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 3.7.2. states that, "Exceptions to the petition and appeal deadlines can only be granted in cases where extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control render the student unable to submit a petition or appeal within the specified timeline. The student must be able to show that the extenuating circumstances were ongoing. The student must also be able to demonstrate that these circumstances prevented the student from acting between the time the original decision was received and the time at which the appeal was eventually initiated. An appeal of this type should include a presentation of the specific reasons for the delay and must include documents that support the reasons for this delay.”
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulations 1.1 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. These kinds of extraordinary situations should be supported by official documentation from a health care practitioner or other relevant professional. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, and your academic transcript.
I recognize that you have experienced a difficult few years at university and I was glad to read that you have begun to utilize academic supports on campus such as Student Academic Success Services (SASS). I have denied this request as it is unclear why missed the petition deadline for the 2022/2023 academic year and your petition did not
include documentation to confirm academic impacts from an unexpected extenuating circumstance during the terms that you are petitioning from.
