I have carefully considered your request to waive the Petition Deadline related to the 2022 Winter, 2022 Fall and 2023 Winter terms. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulations 1.1 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, your transcript, and the documentation that you supplied.
I acknowledge the multiple extenuating circumstances that you have experienced during your career at Queen’s University and I was glad to read that you are being supported at this time.
I have denied this petition request as the documentation that you supplied doesn’t mention the 2022 Winter or 2022 Fall terms that you are petitioning from, nor does it specify the timeline of the extenuating circumstances that you wrote about in your petition letter or how your academic performance was directly affected. Matteo, I want you to know that I do recognize that the documentation that you supplied dated July 8 and July 16 suggests academic impacts during the 2023 Winter term however, it does not specify the timeline of such impacts. I also see that you were able to achieve high grades in some classes during that term despite the extenuating circumstances.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
