I have reviewed your petition to take more than 6.0 units at another institution on a Letter of Permission during the 2024/2025 academic year. As you know, Regulation 14.1 indicates that a student on a degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science may be permitted to take up to 6.0 units of undergraduate classes elsewhere for credit toward a degree offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science via a Letter of Permission. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to take 6.0 units of JAPN courses at another institution during the FW24/25 academic year. I have granted this part of your request due to the exceptional learning opportunity that you have presented within your petition letter. Please know that students can take a maximum of 18.0 units per term, including courses taken at other institutions.
Domestic Letter of Permission information can be found at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/current-students/course-planning-and-options. International Letter of Permission information, including eligibility and application, can be found on the International Programs Office website at queensu.ca/ipo/study-abroad/international-letter-permission. It is important to note that some institutions are not eligible for a Letter of Permission and not all courses are eligible for transfer credits. It is your responsibility to apply for a Letter of Permission through SOLUS and receive approval before applying to the host institution.
To deny your request to take 3.0 units of ECON courses at another institution during the 2024/2025 academic year. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 3.3.1.7 at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/current-students/course-planning-and-options stress that petition requests to take more than 6.0 units at another institution must directly address how this is necessary due to extenuating circumstances or an exceptional academic opportunity. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance.
I have denied this part of your request as your petition didn’t demonstrate extenuating circumstance preventing you from being able to take a 3.0 units ECON course at Queen’s University. I recognize that you plan to participate in an internship during the 2025 Winter term however. competing commitments such as working a job or engaging in an internship while taking classes is not considered to be an unexpected extenuating circumstance. Zhe, I would suggest that you take your final 3.0 units of ECON at Queen’s University during either the 2024 Fall or 2025 Winter terms along with your currently enrolled LLCU courses as I see many options that are currently available for you to enroll in.
Finally, please be advised that Bachelor of Arts Honours students are allowed a maximum of 57.0 transfer units toward their academic program including a maximum of 24.0 units toward their major.
