Dear Christian Luchin:

I have carefully considered your petition to drop PHIL 275, LLCU 214 (W23), PHIL 330, PHIL 347, POLS 243, and POLS 261 (F23) past the academic deadline and for Aegrotat Standing in PHIL 250 and PHIL 257 (FW22/23). After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:

To grant your request to drop PHIL 275, LLCU 214 (W23), PHIL 330, PHIL 347, POLS 243, and POLS 261 (F23) after the academic deadline due to the timeline and academic impacts of your extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. Your grades in these courses will be replaced by a DR notation on your transcript.

To deny your request for Aegrotat Standing in PHIL 250 and PHIL 257 (FW22/23). Academic Petition and Appeal regulation 3.3.1.3. states that Aegrotat standing is reserved for a course in which a student who, because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, is unable to complete all the work of the class. At least 60 per cent of the work to be evaluated in the class must be completed. As part of the petition decision process, the instructor must assert that the student has met all of the course learning outcomes.

I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, the documentation that you supplied and the information that I received from the instructors related to your grades in these courses.

I acknowledge that you were not able to complete these courses due to the academic impacts of extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied however, I want you to know that instructors aren’t obligated to retain student grade records past 1 year of a term ending. We have not been able to obtain your individual grades from PHIL 250 (FW22/23) and therefore are unable to determine if you are eligible for Aegrotat Standing or an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in this course. We were able to obtain your individual grades from the Winter portion of PHIL 257 (FW22/23) however the instructor of this course has confirmed that you did not meet the learning outcomes based on the components that you completed and are therefore not eligible for Aegrotat Standing or an Incomplete Grade in this course.

Christian, as the documentation that you supplied confirms the timeline and academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2023 Winter term, I am willing to allow you to drop both PHIL 250 and PHIL 257 (FW22/23) past the academic deadline. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 15 business days of receiving this letter.

Going forward, it is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes during week 7 of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
