Decision Letter

Appeal Number: 1187
Decision Date: July 22, 2015
Associate Dean: Sue Blake
Student Name: Stephen Zhao
Student Email: 9syz@queensu.ca

Dear Mr. Zhao:

As requested, I have carefully reconsidered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years. After reviewing your file with the new information you presented in your academic plan as well as in our meeting, I have decided to change my original decision and grant your request. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.

I have decided to waive the requirement to withdraw based on the additional information and the evidence you provided to show that you have been seeking help through Disability Services and your doctor. However, I will caution you that your GPA is still very low and you will need to earn very strong grades over the next year to avoid another requirement to withdraw ruling. You will need to monitor your workload very carefully and drop any courses within the academic deadlines, as needed if you feel that you cannot earn the high grades you need to raise your GPA to 1.60 and be released from academic probation.

Over the next year, these are the grades you will need to achieve:

1. Assuming that you take a course load of 3 courses per term (18.0 units in total over the fall-winter plus 6.0 units in MATH 121 from the summer term 24.0 units total), you will need an average grade of B in each course to raise your current GPA to 1.60.

OR

2. Assuming that you take a course load of 4 courses per term (24.0 units in total over the fall-winter plus 6.0 units in MATH 121 from the summer term 30.0 units total), you will need an average grade of B- in each course to raise your current GPA to 1.60.

If you cannot meet the target GPA of 1.60 by next May, you will be required to withdraw for a minimum of three years again at that time. Any further appeals submitted asking to waive a requirement to withdraw must supply evidence that your ADHD is being actively managed and your year GPA has substantially increased.

I would strongly recommend that you consider taking only 3 courses per term next year (9.0 units per term is still considered to be a full-time course load by Queen€™s standards). This will allow you the time you need to fully prepare for your classes, prepare assignments and study for tests and exams and thus, earn higher grades.

Please read carefully the document to follow this letter. It contains additional information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Health, Counselling and Disabilities Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

Sue Blake
