Dear Xiangxin Kong:
I have carefully considered your petition request to add MATH 121 (FW24/25) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I want you to know that I considered this request very thoroughly. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, your transcript and the input that I received from the instructor of the course.
I recognize that you experienced a health-related extenuating circumstance during the Summer term and hadn’t planned to take a full course load this academic year. I was glad to read you’re your health issues have been resolved and that you are feeling better. I have however denied this request due to your academic standing. Xiangxin, your transcript shows that you haven’t successfully completed any of the courses that you have attempted since the 2023 Winter term. Enrolling in a course this late in the term is not in your best academic interest especially since an instructor is not obligated to accommodate a student in missed work due to late enrollment.
I would suggest that you focus on completing the two courses that you are currently enrolled in for the 2024 Fall term and I am hopeful that you will be able to succeed going forward. I encourage you to consider enrolling in an additional course for the Winter term if you would like to increase your course load for that term. A strategy that you may consider to improve your cumulative GPA is to repeat failed courses. When a student repeats the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on their transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of their GPA.
