I have carefully considered your petition for Aegrotat Standing in DEVS 361 (W24) and to drop DEVS 250, DEVS 102 and DEVS 220 (S24) After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request for Aegrotat Standing in DEVS 361 (W24) due to the timeline and severity of extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. I was sorry to read of the passing of your friend during the 2024 Winter term and want to offer my condolences. Your instructor has submitted a replacement grade of B+ based on the work that you had completed in the course which will appear on your transcript along with the notation Aegrotat: estimated grade.
Grace, I will also allow you to drop DEVS 101 (W24) as I recognize that this course was also impacted by this circumstance. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 10 business days of receiving this decision letter.
To deny your request to drop DEVS 250, DEVS 102 and DEVS 220 (S24). Academic Petition and Appeal Regulation 1.1 states that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. These kinds of extraordinary situations should be supported by official documentation from a health care practitioner or other relevant professional. The petitions and appeals process does not compensate for extenuating circumstances that the student is unable to resolve, or for which the student is unwilling to actively seek accommodation.
I am sympathetic to your situation and I understand that this is a disappointing decision however, the documentation that you supplied dated July 20, 2024 confirms that that you were to be away from school for 5 days and suggests that you had been experiencing a health issue since June 10, 2024. I have denied this part of your request as the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition. Academic impacts from ongoing circumstances should be managed proactively by utilizing options such as academic consideration or accommodations through QSAS. It is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes before the drop deadline of each term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by the deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating them in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
