I have carefully considered your petition request to waive the petition deadline related to the 2023 Winter term, specifically your request to drop PSYC 251 (W23) and to drop HLTH 102, PSYC 221, PSYC 241 (F23) and DEVS 220 (S24) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to waive the deadline related to the 2023 Winter term and to drop PSYC 251 (W23), HLTH 102, PSYC 221, and PSYC 241 (F23) after the academic deadline as the documentation that you supplied confirms academic impacts from extenuating circumstances through these terms. Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript.
Going forward, I would suggest that you consider registering with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) if you have not done so already, so that you obtain ongoing support from an Accessibility Advisor who can help manage the ongoing impacts of your health on your academics.
To deny your request to drop DEVS 220 (S24) after the academic deadline. As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under "extenuating circumstances." The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however, I have denied this part of your request as your petition did not include documentation to suggest an unexpected extenuating circumstance impacted your academic ability during the 2024 Summer term.
Veronica, I see from your transcript that you had a successful 2024 Winter term and I recognize from your petition letter that you began to experience health-related extenuating circumstances during the 2024 Summer term. I was happy to read that you were able to complete other courses successfully due to considerations provided by the
instructors however, with the absence of documentation to speak to the academic impacts that this circumstance had on your academic performance in DEVS 220, I cannot grant this request. It is the student’s responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on their classes prior to the drop deadline of the term. If they have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, they should drop the course by the deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
If you are concerned about the impact that this course has on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
