Thank you for your petition requesting to take more than 6.0 units of courses on a Letter of Permission, specifically your request to take 12.0 units of courses at Hubei University of Technology. I have carefully reviewed your request, and while I’m unable to grant all of your requests, I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision.
As you know, Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 3.3.1.7 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petition requests to take courses at another institution must directly address how this is necessary due to extenuating circumstances or an exceptional academic opportunity. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. These kinds of extraordinary situations should be supported by official documentation from a health care practitioner or other relevant professional.
I acknowledge that you reduced your 2025 Winter course load due to the impacts of extenuating circumstances and I was happy to read that you are now able to continue your studies at Queen’s. I will allow you to apply for 6.0 units of ECON courses at Hubei University of Technology for the 2025 Summer term as I recognize that extenuating circumstances prevented you from being able to complete these courses in the Winter term and they are not being offered through Queen’s in the Summer.
I have denied your request to take 6.0 units of electives at another institution as your petition did not include documentation to suggest an ongoing extenuating circumstance is preventing you from completing elective courses at Queen’s. I would suggest that you consider taking elective courses through Arts and Science Online at Queen’s during the upcoming summer term or the 2025/2026 academic year. Please know that students can take a maximum of 18.0 units per term, including courses taken at other institutions.
Letter of Permission information, including eligibility and application, can be found on the International Programs Office website at queensu.ca/ipo/study-abroad/international-letter-permission. It is important to note that some institutions are not eligible for a Letter of Permission and not all courses are eligible for transfer credits. It is your responsibility to apply for a Letter of Permission through SOLUS and receive approval before applying to the host institution.
Finally, please be advised that Bachelor of Arts Honours students are allowed a maximum of 57.0 transfer units toward their academic program including a maximum of 24.0 units toward their plan.
