Thank you for your petition regarding an extension of an Incomplete Grade in STAT 263 (W23), LLCU 213 (F23) and BIOL 350 (F24). I have carefully reviewed your request and the information that I received from the instructors of these courses, and while I’m unable to grant all of your requests, I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision.
The Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulation 3.3.1.5. states that a student affected by extenuating circumstances may ask the course instructor for incomplete standing (IN) for up to one full term after the completion of a class. If this request is granted, any further request to submit incomplete work or to write a final examination after that term has elapsed must be made through a petition to the Associate Dean (Academic). The instructor will be consulted for their agreement to a further extension and stating a revised final date for completion of the course work in question or the final examination must also be included. Normally such requests are considered if the student has participated actively in the class and only one or two elements of the course work have not been completed due to extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control. Students with extenuating circumstances who have been unable to complete the majority of the work in a class should consider a petition to drop a class after the deadline rather than an extension of the deadline to submit incomplete work.
I acknowledge the extenuating circumstances that you reported in your petition letter and I was glad to read that you are being supported at this time. I have decided to grant your request for an extension of an Incomplete Grade in LLCU 213 (F23) due to the timeline and severity of extenuating circumstances during the 2023 Fall term as confirmed within the documentation you supplied. It is your responsibility to connect with instructor Nicaso to make the arrangements for a makeup test during the upcoming exam deferral period between April 28 – May 9, 2025.
Regarding your requests for an extension of an Incomplete Grade in STAT 263 (W23) and BIOL 350 (F24), I cannot grant these requests as the majority of the coursework in both of these courses is outstanding and so you are not eligible for this academic option.
The instructor of STAT 263 (W23) has confirmed that 60% of the course is outstanding and they do not support offering a deferred exam at this time as too much time has passed since the 2023 Winter term has ended. If you are concerned with the impact that this course has on your GPA I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript, however only the higher attempt will be included within the calculation of your GPA.
The instructor of BIOL 350 (F24) has confirmed that all components of this course is outstanding. That said, as I acknowledge the academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2024 Fall term that you wrote about within your petition letter. I will allow you to drop BIOL 350 (F24) after the academic deadline instead.
