Thank you for your petition requesting to take more than 6.0 units of courses on a Letter of Permission. After a thorough review, while I’m unable to grant your request, I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision.
As you know, Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.7.1.7 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petition requests to take courses at another institution must directly address how this is necessary due to extenuating circumstances or to an exceptional academic opportunity. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. These kinds of extraordinary situations should be supported by official documentation from a health care practitioner or other relevant professional.
I understand that you have already transferred 12.0 units from other institutions and that you want to take a 3.0 unit course at another school, in addition to 18.0 units at Queen’s during the Fall term. While I recognize that you only recently learned that you needed 21.0 units to complete your degree requirements, I have denied this request as your petition did not include documentation to confirm that an extenuating circumstance prevents you from completing your remaining requirements at Queen’s.
I see that since submitting this petition, you have received permission from the Faculty of Arts and Science to take 21.0 units during the Fall term and have enrolled in a course which meets your final degree requirements. As 21.0 units per term is a very heavy course load, please be sure to evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on your coursework prior to the drop deadline of the term. If you fall behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by deadline. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
