I have reviewed your petition to waive the deadline related to the 2024 Winter and 2024 Summer terms. I understand that you want Credit Standing in HIST 228 (W24) and HIST 260 (S24) as well as an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in POLS 396 (W24). After reviewing your file, I regret to inform you that I am unable to grant all of your requests however, I want to assure you that this decision was made in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Petition and Appeal Regulations.
I have granted your request to waive the deadline related to the 2024 Winter and 2024 Summer terms due to the academic impacts of extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation that you supplied. I was also willing to consider your other requests without requiring you to submit a subsequent petition request.
Regarding your requests for Credit Standing in HIST 228 (W24) and HIST 260 (S24), according to the Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 1.7.1.4, Credit Standing is reserved for a course in which a student has completed all of the work of the class, including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade. While I acknowledge the circumstances that you described in your petition letter, as confirmed within the documentation you supplied, the instructors of HIST 228 and HIST 260 have reported that you did not complete all of the components in these courses and so you are not eligible for Credit Standing in them. The instructor of HIST 228 has confirmed that you did not complete the final project, a critical workshop and one assignment on Medieval medicine. The instructor of HIST 260 has confirmed that you did not complete 3 modules, and the book review.
I want you to know that I also explored other academic options, including Aegrotat Standing in HIST 228 (W24) and HIST 260 (S24). Under Academic Petition and Appeal regulation 1.7.1.3, Aegrotat standing is available only when the instructor confirms that the student has met the essential learning outcomes based on the work that they were able to complete. After reviewing your individual grades in both of these courses, it was found that you aren’t eligible for Aegrotat Standing in HIST 228 as you did not meet the learning outcomes in it based on the work that you completed. If you are concerned with the impact that this course has on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course
code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
I can, however, offer you Aegrotat Standing in HIST 260 (S24) as you completed 75% of this course and have met the learning outcomes in it. The instructor has submitted an Aegrotat Estimated Grade of B- which can replace the existing grade on your transcript. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 10 business days of receiving this letter.
Regarding your request for an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in POLS 396 (W24), Academic Petitions and Appeal Regulation 1.7.1.6. states that a student affected by extenuating circumstances who cannot write their exam as scheduled may submit a request for academic consideration and ask the course instructor for an exam deferral. The instructor may agree to a deferral for up to one full term after the completion of a class. If the student is unable to write the deferred exam due to the same or different extenuating circumstances, any further request for an additional exam deferral must be made through a petition to the Associate Dean (Academic). In such petitions, the instructor will be consulted for their agreement to a further deferral and confirmation of the new exam timeframe must also be included. If the instructor cannot support an extension of an exam deferral, the student may be encouraged to consider other petition options instead.
I want to remind you that requests for further deferrals require instructor support, as instructors are responsible for facilitating and grading deferred exams during the subsequent term. After consulting with the department of Political Studies, I regret to inform you that no additional exam attempts are possible as the instructor is on sabbatical and the department is unable to facilitate a deferral in this course so long after the 2024 Winter term ended.
I want you to know that I also explored other academic options, including Aegrotat Standing in POLS 396 (W24). Upon review of the 70% of coursework completed, it was determined that the Learning Outcomes 1, 2 or 3 were not achieved and so you are not eligible for this option. That said, as I recognize the timeline and academic impacts of extenuating circumstances as confirmed within the documentation you supplied, I will allow you to drop POLS 396 (W24) after the academic deadline. If you choose this option, your final grade will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript and will no longer be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
