I have carefully reviewed your petition, and while I’m unable to grant all of these requests, I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision.
I have granted your request to drop ANAT 216, BIOL 200, GEOL 200, HLTH 205 (W25), BCHM 270 and GPHY 209 (F25) after the academic deadline. Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript once it has been processed by the Office of the University Registrar.
Regarding your requests to waive the petition deadline related to the 2023 Fall, 2024 Winter, 2024 Summer and 2024 Fall terms, students in the Faculty of Arts and Science must submit a petition to drop a course no later than one year after the end of the term in which the course was offered. Academic Petition and Appeal Regulation 1.5.2 at queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stresses that exceptions to the petition and appeal deadlines can only be granted in cases where extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control render the student unable to submit a petition or appeal within the specified timeline. Furthermore, the regulation states that a petition of this type should specify the reasons for the delay and must include documents that support these reasons.
I recognize the multiple health-related circumstances that you have experienced since the 2022 Fall term and appreciate the extensive documentation that you supplied confirming the treatment timeline that you have engaged with. I want to remind you that information about academic petitions and appeal options is available to students each year within the Academic Calendar (queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/) and on the Faculty of Arts and Science website (queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/student-services/academic-petitions-and-appeals). Academic Advisors are also available to help students understand and navigate the academic options available to them based on their individual
circumstances. In the absence of documentation to confirm that an extenuating circumstance prevented you from submitting a petition within the 1-year deadline for each term, I am unable to grant this portion of your request.
If you are concerned with the impact that these courses have on your GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
Going forward, you should know that it is your responsibility to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on your coursework prior to the drop deadline of the term. If you fall behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by deadline. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
