Dear Emma,
I have carefully considered your request for Credit Standing in PSYC 358 (F24) and while I’m unable to grant your petition, I want to assure you that I’ve taken your circumstances into account as part of this decision. In making this decision, I reviewed your petition letter, supporting documentation, and information provided by the course instructor.
According to the Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 1.7.1.4 Credit Standing is reserved for a course in which a student who has completed all of the work of the class, including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the class, but due to illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected.
I acknowledge the multiple circumstances you described in your petition letter, including a new health diagnosis during the 2025 Fall term. I also note that your grades in several courses during this term, including PSYC 358 and PSYC 301, were lower than expected.
While I appreciate the documentation that you supplied, the instructor of PSYC 358 has indicated that you were accommodated appropriately in their class with extensions of deadlines. It is my understanding that your final earned grade was 49.97% which was graciously rounded up to allow you to pass the course. I have denied your request for Credit Standing, as the learning outcomes were not met based on your individual grades.
That said, as the documentation that you supplied confirms the academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2024 Fall term, I will allow you to drop PSYC 301 (F24) after the academic deadline. This would allow your final grade to be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript. If you want to accept this offer, please email asc.petitions@queensu.ca within 10 business days of receiving this letter.
If you are concerned with the impact that your final grade in PSYC 358 has on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
