Dear Mr. Rashid:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ECON 212 (F 2014), ECON 232, ECON 250 and ECON 255 (W 2015) past the academic deadline as well as waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you already know, the academic requirements in the Faculty of Arts and Science are clearly outlined in the Academic Regulation section of the Calendar. The requirement to withdraw is invoked only where students experience ongoing or extreme academic difficulties. The ruling is designed to provide the student with time away from the university to reflect on and remedy the factors impeding their academic success.
The Academic Regulations stipulate that waiving the academic regulations and waiving a requirement to withdraw can be considered only where a student€™s academic performance is affected by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control. The requirement to withdraw is waived only in rare and exceptional circumstances where documentation makes clear that the difficulties are temporary rather than ongoing or that these difficulties have been dealt with in such a way that the student may make a successful return to the university. While it is clear that you experienced a difficult year at university and that you are eager to return to classes, the appeal did not demonstrate to me that an early return to classes is warranted.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional. The extenuating circumstances described in your appeal relate to the stress and distress you experienced concerning your grandmother€™s health. While the documentation supplied does confirm your grandmother€™s illness and your flight information, it fails to confirm your emotional condition from February through to April of 2015, and the impact of this situation on your academics.
I will also note that your poor choice of courses and your decision to defer your final exam in December 2014 were not circumstances that were beyond your control. Furthermore, the lack of attention to checking emails and failing to understand the consequences of your poor academic performance over 3 years are not circumstances that indicate you are managing your problems and you will make a successful return at this time. Your Year GPA over the past 3 years has been well below the minimum threshold required for a General degree: 0.53 in 2011/12, 0.66 in 2012/13 and 1.18 in 2014/15 with an ongoing pattern of failures.
Lastly, the current note from Sharna Cohen indicates that you have attended one counselling session and that you are determined to return to studies. There is no further evidence supplied that you are making any progress on resolving your personal challenges. Without such evidence, I cannot grant your request.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
