Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Studies,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am petitioning in this letter to be added to the course PSYC331 (Winter, 2023).
To explain the extenuating circumstances that I have experienced that led to this submission of the academic appeal, I will mostly cover the challenges that I have encountered with my mental health. I have been struggling with my mental health condition as I have been fighting with low mood and motivation; these have collectively been affecting my cognition and ability to make the best decisions. After revision of my academic plan and schedule for the semester, I realized that studying courses that I am genuinely interested in has been a great help to my mental health and overall well-being.
As for the specific reason for hoping to join the class, I have been monitoring and was on the waitlist to see if I could join PSYC331 prior to the add/drop deadline (January 20th). However, unfortunately, I was not able to get in. Getting into this course means a lot to me, since taking the course and learning the knowledge would greatly help me with my academic career, especially in pursuing future post-graduate studies. The graduate school programs that I plan to apply to require students to be well-versed in each domain of psychology, however, I was not able to take a course at Queen's that focuses on the personality aspect of psychology. Therefore, not having this course at Queen's would put me at a great disadvantage as a candidate for future education. I am very motivated to get caught up with the course, and I have confidence that I could be able to achieve that.
I really hope to get into the course as a great motivation for my mental health condition too. I have been really struggling with low motivation and find that it is hard to find meaning in life. I value my academics very importantly and being able to take classes that I am really interested in and that are going to help with my future studies is going to be a tremendous help to keep me going as a mentally healthy person. This would mean more than just a course to me, but also a huge motivation for me to continue with other aspects of my life. Once I get the motivation, I realize that my mood and mental state will hugely improve as well, so that I will be in a greater mental space to continue on with my studies. I have been in contact with my counsellor at Student Wellness Services, professional staff and a psychiatrist outside of Queen's to develop a well-rounded plan for my wellness moving forward to ensure my academic and overall success in university. I would continue to take my academics seriously as I always have but also keep working on my mental health to strive for a balance.
I would really appreciate it if you could kindly consider my petition as it would be a tremendous help to my academic career and personal well-being. Thank you so much in advance
