Petition Letter
Please note this petition was written with the assistance of Jackson Ain's parents, Andrew Ain and Stacie Weber. Due to Jackson??s current health condition, he requires assistance in the drafting of this petition.
Jackson was in a skiing accident on February 11th which required shoulder surgery on February 16th and a two-week convalescence. As a result of the accident and subsequent surgery, Jackson was unable to attend classes or complete his studies from the time of his accident until his return to residence on Saturday, March 4th (please see note from Dr. Korkola ?? Orthopedic Surgeon). Jackson applied for and obtained academic consideration for this period and accommodations from QSAS. In the week prior to his return, which was still before the deadline to drop courses without academic penalty, consideration was given to potentially dropping some courses. Given only a few weeks of school was missed, Jackson was determined to carry forward with his entire course load.
Shortly after Jackson??s return to school, he began to feel unwell. On Monday, March 13th, he attended the emergency in Kingston. They could not find anything wrong with him and sent him home. His symptoms worsened over the following week and was unable to attend class or focus on his studies. He returned to Barrie on Friday, March 17th and we took him to the emergency. In the hospital, they determined he had severe anemia and admitted him. The following day, they were able to successfully diagnose and start treating the cause of his blood loss.
As a result of his anemia, Jackson??s cognitive abilities were likely impaired for a few weeks prior to admission to the hospital and will continue to be impaired for some time. The doctors anticipate it will be a minimum of 4-6 weeks before Jackson??s brain functions at normal levels. We were advised until his blood levels reach normal levels his ability to process and concentrate will be severally diminished and he will be placed in an unfair or impossible position in his studies. Jackson applied for and obtained academic consideration until April 29, 2023 (please see note from supervising physician, Dr. Sun).
Jackson has suffered multiple medical issues this semester. Given his current condition, he will be missing out on attending his classes for the balance of the semester. Therefore, trying to complete the courses, without having attending them since the week of February 6th would place him at a significant disadvantage. At the time of the deadline to drop courses, it was his full intention to complete his course load. It is a result of the unforeseen second medical situation, that occurred after the deadline, that has placed him in this unfortunate position to need to make this petition.
