Petition Letter
Dear, Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am writing to you today to submit my request to receive a credit standing in Econ 255, Econ 222, GLPH 271, and Econ 239 for the second term of my 2nd year, in which I completed the learning outcomes but earned lower grades due to extenuating circumstances. Specifically, I am referring to the death of Daniel Joseph Berejiklian Cullen, a close friend, which has had a significant impact on my ability to focus on both school and extracurricular activities.
As an Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances, the unexpected loss of Daniel occurred on 2023-01-18. The emotional distress I experienced as a result significantly impaired my concentration and academic performance. The shock of losing someone close to me made it difficult to maintain my regular study routine and cope with the increased stress. As time went on, the grief became more intense, leading me to fall behind in my coursework and underperform on exams and assignments.
I tried to stay on top of my schoolwork by asking for help from my teachers and fellow students, but the emotional toll proved too great. My school performance suffered, and the majority of my classes saw a drop in grade. Despite my difficulties, I was able to pass most of my courses. But I fell behind in several subjects because the material I had missed was too much for me to follow. I turned to my friends and family for support during this time, who guided me through my grief and helped me deal with my emotional state. The consistent talking to my family has been essential in enabling me to process my feelings and helped me cope with this loss.
For my future I plan to ensure academic success moving forward, I have developed a comprehensive plan which will help me with the course load next year. I will continue to speak to somebody if I do not feel well. And have the full support from my Friends and Family to further process my grief, develop coping mechanisms, and ensure that my emotional well-being is supported. I have also implemented wellness strategies in which I will engage in healthy coping mechanisms, such as exercise, meditation, and mindfulness practices, to improve my mental health and overall well-being. Furthermore, I will try to seek more academic support offered by the university, including tutoring, study groups, and workshops to help me stay on track with my coursework and maintain my academic performance.
I understand that granting credit standing in these three courses is an exceptional measure. However, my commitment to my education and personal growth remains unwavering, and I am confident that with the implementation of my future plan, will help me achieve academic success.
Thank you for your time and attention to my petition. I kindly ask that you carefully consider my request, considering the unforeseen and deeply impactful circumstances that have affected my academic performance. I am eager to continue my studies and achieve my full potential at Queens University.
Sincerely,
Benedikt Walkenhorst 20267799
