Petition Letter
To The Associate Dean (Studies),
I would like to appeal to receive Credit Standing in ENGL 100 (Fall/Winter 2014-15) and Aegrotat Standing in LING 100 (Fall/Winter 2014-15).
Before coming to Queen¿¿s, I suffered from minor depression which I was able to cope with through contact with family and friends, and occasional doctor¿¿s appointments. Throughout the 2014-2015 school year at Queen¿¿s my depression worsened. I began to see a counselor at the Queen¿¿s Health, Counselling, and Disability Services in the beginning of November, however the effects of my depression (lethargy, motivational problems, sleep disorder, focus issues) became worse in the Fall exam season, and did not become better with the start of the Winter term. In addition, I began to have suicidal thoughts. As a result, I started going to a family doctor regularly in February, 2015. She started me on anti-depressants, and helped me develop an exercise plan to help improve my mental health. I also continued my counselling sessions at the Health, Counselling, and Disability Services. While my mood slowly improved through the course of the Winter term, anti-depressants do not work immediately, and as a result much of my course work was affected ¿¿ ENGL 100 and LING 100 being affected the most.
I have high hopes for continued improvement in my next year at Queen¿¿s. My dosage with the anti-depressant has been increased, and I am already seeing more improvement in my mood than I did throughout the 2015 Winter term at Queen¿¿s. I will additionally have frequent doctor¿¿s appointments, along with continuing counselling at the Health, Counselling, and Disability Services on campus. If I cannot see a counsellor frequently enough on campus, I will reach further and start going to a therapist in Kingston. Ideally, I would like to improve enough over the summer to be able to handle a full course load, however, I am prepared to become a part-time student if it becomes necessary. Overall, I am very optimistic about my future at Queen¿¿s. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Daryl Woodley
