Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Benard;
I am (credit) appealing for my PSYC100 and HIST121 marks to be given the CR status¿¿two courses I took this past year.
I am appealing these two marks because I have had substantial personal problems with my family this past school year. They had been going on since the summer but had increased in severity from October onwards until the end of the year. By personal problems, I am referring to personal issues within my family, alongside one of my close family members being ill. I am bringing these up because I truly believe that my ability to do well in those two courses was severely impeded by my personal problems. I never felt hungry and had to force myself to eat, and even when I did I did not eat a lot. I was not sleeping well at all, and I constantly found myself having a hard time in concentrating on my work. I also had to go home a lot, which resulted in me missing some tutorials and seminars¿¿for history in particular. I wasn¿¿t able to finish some of my assignments to the best of my ability (because of all the aforementioned things along with the constant travelling), and I struggled with the exams. In December, as a result of stress, I developed an ulcer and I ended up having to write my history exam with the ulcer unresolved. I went to see a residence counsellor, Mr. Freeman Woolnough, in October at the encouragement of my don. I tried my best to not let everything affect me but it wasn¿¿t always easy and I could never fully do so. These problems carried on through until the end of the year.
In regards to my future plan, I am taking the summer to try and handle my personal problems. I hope to have a better, more stable mindset when I come back in September, and the major I hope to get into is one I love so I think that will also help. Furthermore, I will try to see a counsellor again, sooner, if it gets bad again. I will also be careful with my course selection, and perhaps avoid timings for tutorials etc, wherein I would not miss them if I did ever have to go home. I have also spoken to my doctor about the ulcer and how to avoid it again in future. I have spoken to an academic advisor also about my next steps academically.
Thank you for considering my appeal, and I hope to hear from you soon.
PS. I will forward a confirmation letter from Mr. Woolnough in regards to my counsellor appointment, as my letter from a professional.
