Dear Dean Stephenson
My name is Thomas Begic and I recently finished my second year at Queens in the Film & Media and History programs. I am interested in studying at University College Dublin during the spring semester of 2024 and require your permission to do so as part of my International Letter of Permission. I am currently in good academic standing and I am on track to fulfil my academic plan requirements, as well as no outstanding fees, appeals, or requests. Studying at UCD provides valuable international exposure and a diverse cultural experience. It would allow me to immerse myself in a different academic and social environment, fostering personal growth and exposing me to intercultural perspectives. Studying abroad also provides an opportunity to network and build connections with other students, faculty, and professionals from different academic and cultural backgrounds. This can be beneficial for future collaborations, job prospects, or international career opportunities.
University College Dublin provides an extensive history department with venerated professors, courses, and widespread research opportunities as well as a historically significant campus in a historically significant city. I have a passion for history and enjoy understanding the developmental steps of society as humans grew into the world we live in today. I am also particularly enthusiastic about Celtic and Nordic culture and the mythology of ancient societies. As a result, the history course I am submitting for review is HIS21240 Celts, Romans and Vikings: The Formation of Early Ireland.
In the Film program, I have taken a particular interest in mass media, globalization and cultural discourses. Understanding culture and connectivity is at the forefront of media literacy, and while the Queen’s Film & Media program is cutting-edge, it is culturally confined by location and organization. Studying in a city like Dublin provides exposure to far more opportunities, jobs, events, and people that can help me advance my knowledge and network Thus, the three Film and Media courses I am submitting for review are: FS30200-21st Century Television, FS20150-Documentary and Society, and FS30170-Whiteness, Ethnicity & US Culture. Each course carries a particular non-North American perspective, two of which highlight Irish and other European filmmakers and creators. At the same time, the third analyzes and critiques American culture and diversity (of which Canada shares many of the same cultural cornerstones) from a non-white European perspective.
I have already gotten approval from both the Film and History program chairs, as well as corresponded with UCD's office of international student services about the application process and the European Transfer Credit System in order to get the best understanding of what I need to accomplish to both be accepted and achieve success abroad. UCD hosts world-class Film and History programs in one of the most diverse and culturally significant cities in Europe, with countless connections and opportunities, studying in Dublin and completing the courses provided would greatly enrich my studies and further my understanding and mastery of my programs as well as future success.
