Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I would like to resubmit my initial petition, number #9328, which I previously withdrew. I had the misconception that retaking CHEM281 in the fall would result in my 'IN' grade being factored into my final mark for the Fall term, rather than being recorded as a fail grade. The presence of a failing grade on my transcript significantly hinders my prospects of presenting myself as a capable student for postgraduate programs when I apply after completing my university studies. Thus, here is my petition according to Summer 2022 as follows:
I am writing to request reconsideration regarding my ability to drop CHEM281 after the academic penalty deadline has passed. During this summer term, I enrolled in CHEM281 (May 10-June 21) with the intention of successfully completing the course. However, personal circumstances arose that hindered me from achieving my original goal. I appreciate the opportunity to explain my situation.
Over the past year, I have faced significant challenges with my mental health. I sought counselling from Queen's University and participated in the Managing Powerful Emotions group therapy sessions from February 3 to March 31. Eventually, I started seeing a trauma specialist therapist outside of Queen's on a regular basis. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints and exhausting my insurance coverage with Queen's, I had to pause my appointments with my therapist for the summer. The dates of my previous appointments were February 24, March 3, 10, 16, 23, and 31, as well as April 6 and 22. I have a mental health assessment appointment scheduled with Queen's Student Wellness Services on June 17, as my therapist suggested that I might have a mood/personality disorder and should seek a professional opinion. Although I had initially planned for my last appointment with my therapist to be on May 24, I requested to reschedule it for the regular school year of 2022 when my insurance coverage would be active again.
I am financially independent, as my mother has passed away and my relationship with my father is limited. Therefore, I support myself financially and have been working as much as possible this summer to save for my education and cover my living expenses. However, not being able to afford therapy during the summer has set me back in terms of my mental health, making it more challenging for me to function adequately and complete a summer course. This is uncharacteristic of me, as I genuinely care about my education and have performed well as a student. Unfortunately, I have only managed to complete two assignments and my midterm as the summer course approaches its conclusion next week. My intention is to appeal for this course and take it at a regular pace during the fall when I can resume regular therapy sessions, using the summer as a break from overwhelming responsibilities.
I acknowledge that I was aware that taking an accelerated summer course would be challenging. Additionally, it has been difficult for me to adjust to living without roommates who provide support and help me stay accountable for self-care. At times, I struggle to eat enough or find the emotional strength to keep up with my responsibilities. Once I have undergone my mental health assessment, I hope to have a clearer understanding of how to proceed in
addressing my mental health needs.
Please understand that my incomplete coursework does not reflect my abilities as a student. I genuinely value my education and strive to perform well academically. Thank you for considering my appeal.
Sincerely,
Charlize Delos Reyes Cash
