Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
My name is Sofia Loria, and I am a first-year student in general science. I am petitioning an aegrotat standing in MATH 121 due to a persistent mental and physical health condition, anorexia nervosa.
Coming to Queen's from out of province was very difficult for me due to an extensive waitlist for the eating disorder clinic in Kingston and a lack of available resources around the university. Upon arrival, I requested accommodations through meal/dining services which were granted but rarely met. With my meals mainly being only rice, I became very malnourished and unfortunately suffered an upper GI bleed on December 9th. I was released from the hospital on December 10th, still in poor health, and wrote my MATH 121 midterm three days later on December 14th. Without fully considering my condition's severity and recovery period, I submitted a short-term request due to extenuating circumstances on the evening of December 9th for an exam scheduled on the morning of the 10th. Although I lacked the mental and physical capabilities to write the exam, I wrote it under the impression that I could not defer it as I could not obtain new documentation to extend the request. Unfortunately, attempting the exam in this condition ultimately cost me a passing grade in the course. My circumstances have not yet been resolved, as it will take me a couple of years to recover fully, but I am working every day to try and get there. Some of the steps I have taken and will be taking to ensure future academic success have been dropping out of the meal plan, getting a tutor and temporarily switching programs. Though my situation was far from ideal, it allowed me to be pushed up the waitlist and get into the Kingston Adult Eating Disorder Clinic. By finally having access to a support team for regular checkups, I will be monitored to make sure my health does not decline. I have attached a letter from my healthcare provider and the previous note from the Kingston General Hospital physician. Thank you.
