Petition Letter
Dear Mrs. Stephenson,
I am petitioning to drop Math121, Math110, and Econ110.
Last year my mom was very sick, and I had a very rough time at school. I received the news about my mom in early September, and after I received the news, I was lost and didn't know what to do. The entire school year I had a hard time focusing, I was continually worried about her health and not being able to be there with her when she was sick was extremely difficult. She was in and out of the ICU several times since the beginning of September.
I was really looking forward to seeing her during Christmas break, unfortunately, the chemo treatments made her sicker and she spent Christmas in the hospital. The entire Christmas break was filled with sadness about Mom's health. We were hopeful that the aggressive treatment plan she was on was going to be successful. It was not.
Prior to the start of the final winter exams, my dad asked us to come back home to see Mom again, maybe for the last time. She was very sick and in hospice care by this time. In hindsight, I should have stayed home and skipped the exams. However, I returned to school and tried to study for exams but I simply could not concentrate on anything. The results show this.
Mom passed away on May 27th. I've attached the death certificate.
This past year has been the hardest year of my life. Being away from home for the first time, learning of my mother's serious illness, and not being able to be with my family, these things really affected my first year at Queens.
As time has passed, I am coming to terms with our loss. I feel like I am ready to resume my studies and in fact, think that continuing my education will help me greatly. I am really committed and want to continue my education at Queens. My performance during my first year is not a true indication of my abilities or my commitment to excellence. I'd like to be reinstated so I can continue my education.
With what was going on at home, I missed the June 13th deadline. Truthfully I was not thinking about school, my grades, or any future plans around that time. I was trying to spend as much time with my family after my mother's death because that was the only thing that felt right to me, and it was the only thing that was getting me through the days.
The courses I did pass last year were not with great marks and my performance deteriorated during the winter term. My plan is to retake the courses mentioned above as soon as possible.
I would really appreciate it if you would approve my petition.
Thank you for your understanding and I am looking forward to returning to Queens.
Sincerely,
Chris Koumoutsakis
