Petition Letter
Dear Sir/Madame:
I am prepared to pay the $100 fee to have my examination in my July 2023 law examination to be reviewed and, if appropriate, be re-graded. The reasons for my request are as follows:
1. The night of the examination the regional Rogers service went on an outage. I had done the short questions within the exam proper. However, the essay was being typed in word which I was planning on re-inserting into the examination proper but with the power outage this could not be done.
2. I immediately called Queens IT about this problem and was on the phone with them about 10-15 minutes. I then lost contact with the IT department as well. I, therefore, sent the essay portion of the exam to the professor with an explanatory email.
3. I provided the IT person my various attempts to email the professor and get the essay re-inserted in the timely manner;
4. I had an approximate 85% average going into the exam. I had previously been doing well in the course;
5. To end up with my final mark, I had to have been awarded an approximate 51% on the examination. I find it hard to believe that I could have plummeted more than 30% between course work and examination;
6. I believe that my work on the exam was similar to my work in the rest of the course and should not have resulted in such a different mark.
7. As the overall grade here will be the lowest mark of my university experience to date (full first year course load and 3 summer courses), this matter does seem to be a bit of an outlier. The “statistics” and “Ancient Humour” courses I took this summer were both solid A grades.
8. In summary it seems that a review would be appropriate and fair.
