Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Lauryn Barr and I am writing to you today to request the withdrawal of LLCU 203 (Winter, 2023).
In early January, I received distressing news regarding my Grandmother’s health, as she suddenly became very sick. Hearing this was very hard for me as I have always been extremely close with her and I was not able to be there and provide her with support during this challenging time. As her illness worsened, my Grandmother was moved to palliative care and she didn't have much time. The stress and anxiety I was feeling during this time, not being able to be there for my Grandmother and the rest of my family was extremely emotionally overwhelming. Due to my school, I was unable to return home to say my final goodbyes before my Grandmother's passing on March 15th, 2022. Coping with the loss of my grandmother and my first experience of death, while being away from home and my family was all incredibly challenging. Focusing and prioritizing my academics while undergoing my first experiences of grief became extremely challenging . This resulted in me falling behind on my coursework, specifically LLCU 203. This course was formatted in a way to have all work submitted at the end - the time when I was mentally struggling the most, as well as the requirement to attend every lecture - which became increasingly difficult for me during this time. I was able to get in contact with both student wellness and Professor Shulist, who were both tremendous assistance to me during this difficult time. I was under the impression that an incomplete in the course was equivalent to a withdrawal, however I later found out it is a much different process. It was recommended to me by both Kelly from student wellness and Dr. Shulist to then withdraw from the course.
I have taken numerous steps to ensure my success moving forward, including talking to Queen’s student wellness, friends and family around me and creating weekly plans to stay on top of my academics. Additionally, I have adjusted my course selection, now focusing on courses essential to my program (Sociology), rather than electives - such as LLCU 203, to succeed in my future academic goals. Regular meetings with academic advisors and medical professions are further steps I plan to take to help support my academic and personal goals this year along with my overall well-being.
I appreciate your time and understanding, and I hope you take my request into consideration.
Best regards,
Lauryn Barr
