Petition Letter
Hello,
My name is Rachel Heaney and I am in second year Life Sciences. I am here on a scholarship, as a recipient of the Queen's Chancellor's scholarship. To renew this scholarship each year, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA. I am enrolled in ANAT 215, and recently have decided to switch my major from Life sciences to Biochemistry. ANAT 215 is not a requirement for Biochemistry, and I fear if I stay in this class it will jeopardize my GPA needed to maintain my scholarship. The Chancellor's scholarship is a $36,000 dollar scholarship that has helped me significantly in my financial barriers. If my scholarship does not renew, then my time here at Queens may be cut short, as I have limited amount of OSAP that will not be able to cover my tuition. In addition to financial barriers, I have faced numerous psychological barriers in this fall term. In second year life sciences, we are faced with nine midterms over the span of just a few weeks. This had a significant effect on me, and progressed my anxiety to the point where I was not sleeping, throwing up and having severe panic attacks. This has had a significant impact on my academic performance, and my ability to do well in this course. Through the course of these three weeks in October, my sleep was limited; as I was at the library every night for extensive hours. To deal with this stress now that midterms are over, I have gone to therapy and counselling. However, now I am faced with the academic tolls that this course has had on me, and the negative effect it has had on my GPA. In order to renew my scholarship for next year, I need to maintain a GPA of 3.5; we did not receive any major marks back until after the drop date, hence why I refrained dropping. The only marks we did receive, had a class average of a 50% on an exam worth 15% of our mark. I am significantly worried that my scholarship will not renew, and since I am switching my major to biochemistry and do not need this course, would really love if you could consider dropping this course after the deadline.
Thank you so much,
Best,
Rachel Heaney
