Subject: Request for Academic Consideration due to Extenuating Circumstances
I am writing to request your compassionate consideration regarding my academic performance in the Summer 2023 term, during which I was enrolled in ECON 212, DEVS 220, and RELS 131. My ability to meet academic expectations was profoundly impacted by a significant personal loss and the ensuing emotional distress.
In Summer 2023, I experienced the devastating loss of a very close family member. This unforeseen tragedy deeply affected me, both emotionally and mentally, leading to a significant disruption in my academic pursuits. The grief and associated challenges made it difficult for me to maintain adequate academic performance.
Despite my efforts to cope, my academic work suffered considerably. I remained in constant communication with my professors, keeping them updated to the best of my ability. Unfortunately, my circumstances prevented me from withdrawing from my courses by the designated deadlines. This oversight resulted in additional stress, as I struggled to keep up with course requirements while managing my grief.
Recognizing the severity of my situation, I sought assistance from the Student Wellness Services at our university. The support and guidance I received there were invaluable, and I have obtained documentation from them. This documentation, attached, highlights the significant impact of my circumstances on my academic performance.
These courses are critical to my academic progression, and under normal circumstances, I am confident in my ability to excel in them. However, the summer term was an anomaly, heavily influenced by my personal loss.
For ECON 222, I was placed in a difficult situation where I could not write the deferred exam date - and also missed the deferral period for the deferred exam. I communicated with my professor Michael Kennedy about the situation, and was told to submit a petition to extend the incomplete grade, even though it has turned into a Fail now. These events are significantly impacting my GPA, and I am doing everything I can to make my situation better.
In light of these extenuating circumstances, I humbly request your consideration for the following:
The opportunity to retake ECON 212, drop DEVS 220, and extend my incomplete grade for ECON 222.
I understand the importance of adhering to academic policies and deadlines. However, I believe that the unprecedented nature of my situation warrants special consideration. I am committed to my academic goals and am eager to move forward from this challenging phase with renewed focus and determination.
