Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean
I am writing to request consideration for dropping STATS 263 past the standard course drop deadline. This request stems from unforeseen and significant family challenges that have emerged since the deadline passed, severely impacting my ability to continue with the course effectively.
Recent developments in my family dynamics have required me to frequent and urgent travel back to my hometown which is more than 3 hours away. These trips have been critical in maintaining the stability of my family environment.
Post the course drop deadline, my parents have been undergoing a challenging phase in their marriage, escalating to the point where my presence at home has become crucial. The tensions between my parents have heightened, with my mother finding herself increasingly marginalized in their discussions. My involvement at home has, in some instances, helped facilitate more civil and constructive communication between them. I am deeply concerned that my absence could contribute to a further deterioration of their relationship, potentially leading to irrevocable decisions. Whenever I am not present things always seem to worsen. I have attempted to balance the two but at present it seems impossible for me to.
The emotional toll of this situation, coupled with the physical and mental fatigue from frequent travel, as well as absence from main campus has significantly impacted my ability to focus on my academic responsibilities. My attendance and participation in STATS 263 have been directly affected, leading to a decline in my academic performance and mental well-being.
Under these circumstances, I kindly request your consideration for a late drop of STATS 263 from my current semester's course load. In choosing to petition for the withdrawal from STATS 263, I would like to say why I’ve decided this class. The scheduling of STATS 263, with all the classes being very early in the morning, directly conflicts with the times I need to travel home. I always left early as to avoid traffic as well as believing I would be fine in STATS as I didn’t do too bad compared to my other courses. This led me to focus more on courses where I was having more trouble with, under the assumption that my foundational understanding of STATS 263 would help. Unfortunately, this approach has had the opposite effect, and my grasp on the course content has diminished significantly due to the reduced engagement and heightened stress.
A lot of thought was put into making this decision, and I believe it is necessary to maintain both my academic integrity and family obligations.
Thank you for considering my petition.
