Petition Letter
I am appealing the decision to deny me a retroactive letter of permission to transfer credits for courses taken at the University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology made by J.Hugh Horton, Ph.D. Associate Dean (Studies).
In the letter submitted to me by the Associate Dean, the second paragraph read ¿¿it is reasonable that you were unable to apply for a Letter of Permission at the time you registered for these courses, as they were apparently not being offered as credit courses by UOIT¿. By this I understand it to mean that if the courses that I completed met Queen¿¿s requirement for a degree in Arts and Science this request was reasonable and likely would have been granted. So the question is the courses. Although the courses listed were highly technical, they had a significant portion academic theory. In fact the first four weeks was theory in Science Fundamental. The six subjects were, Nuclear Theory, Heat and Thermodynamics, Electrical theory, Chemistry and Mechanical properties, Mechanical equipment science and Instrumentation and control. These theory courses were to prepare for the more difficult technical courses.
That being said I am asking on compassionate grounds. I started taking courses at Queen¿¿s over a decade ago to fulfil a regret I carry from my youth. I am 54 years old and less than 3 years away from retirement. I need 18 credits to finish a 3 year degree. May not be a huge accomplishment in the academic world but for me it took many sacrifices to get this far.
The courses at the University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology were not easy courses. They had a pass mark of 70. There content and university oversight were at a very high academic standard. This would not reduce the rigour expected in a Queen¿¿s degree but raise the bar to achieving it.
I have two elderly parents who did not see any of their children go to University and I would like to see them at my graduation next year. I hope you can see positively and grant me the transfer credits I need to meet my elective portion of my degree. I am currently enrolled in a 3 credit Psyc course and will need 6 credits Psyc course to complete my degree if you allow 12 transfer credits from the University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology.
