Petition Letter
Hello,
I hope this is within the 21-day appeal period as I was told by an Arts and Science academics counsellor over the phone that marks were officially released on May 5th and that I would have up to 21 days after that to make an appeal (May 26th). I have been incredibly busy since arriving back home from Kingston and just attended a 4-day long conference from Friday to Monday where an internet connection was unavailable to me.
On April 24th I wrote a deferred exam (from the Fall term) for STATS 263 (that late because it was very hard for me to schedule a time before then). I had to go home two days prior (to Toronto) because of a family emergency/problem back home that I don't feel comfortable disclosing. After arriving back in Kingston I was fairly pressed for time. As my exam schedule was very condensed I had a minimal amount of time to pack in the rest of my studying for STATS 263. It was tough and took many hours, but I managed to do it with confidence. However, my mind was still on things back home and my body was thoroughly exhausted.
On the exam day I don't know what happened. I opened the exam and felt good. I flipped through the booklet and new I could do well on this exam. As time progressed however, I could tell that was not necessarily the case. It was very difficult for me to focus on things with thoughts on back home. I began to feel nauseous and anxious and just couldn't seem to grasp even simple concepts as reading a question. I decided to push through, however, as I knew it was my only shot at the exam. Though a small part of the entire ordeal, my body seemed to give on me and I seemed to have slept/passed out for a small duration of time. I woke up with time to spare but thoughts elsewhere. I could not finish what was to be a relatively easy exam for me.
The second the exam finished I emailed my instructor, Charles Molson, and he understood my circumstances. He said he would write to support a change to CR, and that I should appeal.
When I got home I slept for over 24 hours and then had a long conversation over the phone with my family back home when I woke up. I felt better just talking to people again. I took some advil relieve a headache and drank some tea and went for a long walk to get rid of all my negative thoughts. I don't really have medical documentation as the episode seemed to be temporary. When I visited a doctor at a later date in Toronto, nothing much was thought of it other than a small episode of anxiety. I will attach a copy of my email to Dr. Molson as supporting documentation.
