Petition Letter
Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Giulianna Gonsalves and I am writing to you in regards to a scheduling issue I have been facing since September of 2023. As it sparks great concern and despair in my academics at Queen’s University, I hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. As I am not able to include attachments in this petition, I will copy the emails and paste them in quotations. The real copies are included in Petition Documentation.
As I am in Concurrent Education, I am required to take PROF 210, (Thursday’s from 2:30pm-4:30pm) and as a B.MUS student, I am required to take ensembles, MUTH 260 (Thursday’s 4:00pm-5:30pm).
When I signed up for MUTH 260 in August 2023, the class times were not finalized as of yet. It was only on August 30th, 2023 that I received an email from Ms. Caylee Raycroft-Wright (caylee.rw@queensu.ca), and September 1st, 2023 that I received an email from Ms. Patricia O’Callaghan (poc1@queensu.ca) that I realized there would be an overlap with my class times, after I had already auditioned and successfully secured a spot in the Multi-Genre Vocal Ensemble, MUTH 260. Please see below.
“Hi Giulianna,
The Choral Ensemble is scheduled for Mondays 4:00-5:30pm and Wednesdays 2:30-4:00pm. The Multi-Genre Vocal Ensemble meets Mondays 2:30-4:00pm and Thursdays 4:00-5:30pm.
Hope that helps!

“Hello everyone,
Welcome to the Multi-Genre Vocal Ensemble!
We will be meeting on Mondays from 2:30 - 4pm and Thursdays from 4 - 5:30pm, in Harrison-LeCaine Hall, Room 120.
I look forward to meeting you and working with you (again in some cases). I will activate the OnQ page in the next couple of days, where I'll put up scores, messages, and assignments throughout the year.
Please get in touch if you have any questions, and I will see you on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 4pm.
best wishes,

Upon receiving these emails, I informed Ms. O’Callaghan that I would be late to her class as a result of the class times overlapping and returning from West Campus, (where PROF 210 is held). As she did not respond to this email, I talked to her after our first class and she said there would be no problem. Please feel free to reach out to her to confirm this conversation and see attached below.
“Hello Ms. O'Callaghan,
My name is Giulianna Gonsalves and I am in your Multi-Genre Vocal Ensemble. It is nice to meet you :)
I would like to let you know in advance that I will be late to your class on Thursday's, as I have a class which ends at 4:30 on West Campus. I know it is a big overlap, but I am determined to be in your class for as long as possible on Thursday's and every Monday.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Giulianna Gonsalves
B.Mus, B.Ed.”
On the first day of PROF 210, I explained the situation to my Professor, Dr. Jordan Shurr (j.shurr@queensu.ca), and my T.A, Mr. Akomaye Undie (akomaye.undie@queensu.ca), to which they responded that class actually ends at 4:00pm as opposed to 4:30pm as it shows on SOLUS.
At this point I thought the issue was resolved, until I realized the MUTH 260 was still not on my schedule. (PROF 210 is and always was on my schedule). After some time, I was finally on the OnQ of MUTH 260. At that point, I believed the situation was finally solved and I had officially been registered for the class. Unfortunately that was not the case. I was told by Ms. Caylee Raycroft-Wright that I required email evidence from Ms. Patricia O’Callaghan, and either Dr. Jordan Shurr or Mr. Akomaye Undie that I was able to remain in both classes. Please see the attached below.
“Hi there Kim and Caylee,
I'm writing to confirm that Giulianna Gonsalves and Sabrina Nardi have been coming to all ensemble classes, rehearsals and concerts this semester (MUTH X60 - Multi-genre Vocal Ensemble).
I also am aware that they have a class that lasts until 4pm on Thursdays, but they always get to my ensemble that day in a timely fashion.
Let me know if you need anything else from me confirming that they should be registered for this class so they can get the appropriate credits.
best wishes,

“Hello Sabrina,
Thank you for your email. The time for the class (PROF 210) is 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM.

As you will notice, the email by Mr. Akomaye Undie was signed to my classmate, Sabrina Nardi, who was also dealing with the same issue. We thought that by her emailing him on our behalf, we both would be cleared; however upon showing this email to Ms. Caylee Raycroft-Wright, she informed me that since my name was not included, it would not be valid for myself.
I would like to highlight that despite this journey, I have continued to complete all assignments for both classes, attended concerts and performances, and attended both classes throughout the entire fall 2023 semester, other than when I was in the ER (Kingston General Hospital). Please see the attached below.
“Dear Sir,
Unfortunately I will not be able to attend PROF 210 class today as I am unwell and in the ER. Please let me know how I can make up the In-Class Assignment.
Thank you,
Giulianna Gonsalves

“Hi Patricia,
Unfortunately I will not be able to come to MGV today, as I am unwell and in the ER.
Please let me know what I missed.
Thank you,
Giulianna Gonsalves”
Both professors take attendance and obtain access to my assignment records, so please feel free to contact them regarding these matters.
It is with great respect that I write this to you, and aspire for MUTH 260 to be added to my SOLUS and receive 1.5 units for the class.
I truly appreciate your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Giulianna Gonsalves
