Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am writing this petition letter requesting to late drop HLTH332 (Online - 2769) and request an Aegrotat standing in HLTH230 (Online - 2747) from summer 2022. Unfortunately, extenuating circumstances relating to my current health condition have adversely affected my academic performance; with symptoms consuming much of my time and energy I was unable to complete the majority of the course evaluations successfully as well as write this letter within the Appeal Deadline.
Without going into specific detail, the extenuating circumstance beyond my control is due to mental illness including depression and disordered eating. I have been struggling with mental illness for a few years now and managing my symptoms while completing my studies has been very difficult. After petitioning to late drop courses from winter 2022 due to significant symptoms, I then started the summer 2022 semester in a better state than the winter. I was able to complete all my assignments HLTH230 with A+ grades, however, began experiencing significant symptoms as final exams approached, I was unable to write the final exam as a result. These are the same circumstances in HLTH332, however, I was unable to complete 60% of the coursework by the end of the semester. The professor granted me an extension of an incomplete grade until the end of the fall 2022 semester but unfortunately, I was unable to submit my outstanding assignments as I had to drop my fall 2022 courses and return home because symptoms became unbearable.
Truthfully, I was willing to accept the failure in HLTH332 and my D grade in HLTH230 from summer 2022, as I was deeply struggling with mental illness, and could not bring myself to write this letter. This is evident in my course history as I dropped my fall 2022 courses and had to return home for extra support. I continued to struggle with significant symptoms relating to this illness throughout the following year, evident in my additional petition letter for courses from the winter, summer and fall 2023 semesters. After my recent meeting with Anna van der Meulen (Department Manager and Undergraduate Chair of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies), to discuss my transcript, petitions, and degree plan, I have decided to write this petition letter and appeal the deadline to late drop HLTH332 and request Aegrotat standing in HLTH230.
My transcript has multiple failures and drops from the past 2 years, due to symptoms that have been adversely affecting my academic performance. However, when I have the energy and mental capacity to complete assignments and exams, I receive great marks as seen in my courses requesting Aegrotat standings. I also believe I am getting better at managing my symptoms, as I am attending lectures and completing more assignments than in previous semesters.
I am currently a student registered with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services for mental health. My accommodations made the deferral process for evaluations and exams much easier, however, the unforeseen severity and relapse of my symptoms at the time are outside what is permitted under my accommodations.
I have met with Anna van der Meulen (Department Manager and Undergraduate Chair of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies) and have discussed my transcript, these petitions and my plan for achieving academic success moving forward. This plan includes taking a 5th year of school, as well as exactly which courses I need to take these summer, fall and winter semesters to graduate in the spring of 2025.
Additionally, I am managing my current health condition by receiving outpatient services and medication from Dr. Jane Nixon, as well as attending weekly appointments with registered psychotherapist Lisa Hickling Miller to prevent future relapse in symptom severity.
Attached is a letter from health care professional, registered psychotherapist Lisa Hickling Miller confirming this extenuating circumstance. As well as a letter from my 2022 accessibility advisor, Deb Bruce.
Sincerely,
Hannah Seckler
