Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am writing to petition enrolment in the course STAT263 (Winter, 2024).
I had recently been enrolled in the course at the beginning of the semester, but decided to drop it because I was enrolled in 6 courses for the semester (the maximum) and I felt the course load would be too much. It is important to note: I was also enrolled in ‘MATH212’ but was finding it a big jump from the prerequisite last semester ‘MATH112’. I chose to stay in the course until the first homework assignment to see how I do. This was submitted with the intent of seeing my score, and judging my capability of continuing in the course. I did not realise there would be a deadline to enrol in another course should 212 not workout. After completing the assignment, I realised the course was too broad of a scope based on my limited background and the fact that this course was combined with engineering students (the professor therefore brushed over topics very quickly and assumed we understood quickly by catering towards the engineering students). As mentioned before, I realised the course was too difficult for me to complete, so I looked again into STAT263, and found it to be the only other math course to work with my schedule. I was on the waitlist for a week, and was 3rd on the waitlist until the deadline to enrol passed. Now, there is an opening but I am unable to enrol myself. This is my petition to enrol.
I assure you I will not be behind in the course as, ever since joining the waitlist, I have been attending the class at the scheduled times, listening and taking notes. Moreover, I have 2 friends currently enrolled in the course who have shared their textbook with me and let me look over their notes. I understand everything covered so far, so it will not be an issue catching up while enrolled. Moreover, I have already bought the textbook, so I plan to review previous topics covered to deepen my understanding. When added to the onQ, I will take a look over Prof. Molson’s presentations, again, to deepen my understanding of the course.
Ultimately, I had enrolled to the STAT263 waitlist, but was 3rd when the deadline passed, so it was out of my control whether or not I could be let in. Now, there is an opening, and I am petitioning to be let in. This will allow me to enrol in 5 courses this semester and to lighten my course load in the future by not having to take 6 in third and fourth year.
I appreciate your consideration in allowing me to enrol.
