Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am writing to petition for credit standing for PHAR 380 for the Fall semester of 2023. This request comes after facing significant challenges due to a mental health illness during October and November of 2023, which severely impacted my academic performance, particularly in this course.
During the mentioned period, I experienced debilitating anxiety that profoundly affected my ability to focus, study, and complete assignments. The severity of my anxiety was such that starting or finishing any work became an insurmountable task, directly impacting my performance in PHAR 380. This course, being the most challenging of my semester, exacerbated my condition, resulting in a significantly diminished capacity to engage with the material and perform to my usual standards.
In response to these extenuating circumstances, I took proactive steps to manage my mental health, including regular sessions with my psychotherapist and adhering to a prescribed medication regimen. These interventions were critical in addressing my anxiety but could not fully mitigate its impact on my academic responsibilities during the critical period.
The question of why only this course was affected, as opposed to others I was enrolled in, is valid. PHAR 380's rigorous demands and the complexity of its content significantly heightened my anxiety levels, more so than in any other course. This specific course's challenges, coupled with my mental health state at the time, created a unique situation where my ability to perform was most severely compromised.
As to why I did not drop the course earlier, I was initially performing well, with no indication that my anxiety would escalate to the point of severely affecting my ability to continue successfully. Unfortunately, the escalation occurred after the drop period, leaving me with no administrative recourse to mitigate the situation at the time.
Looking forward, I am committed to ensuring that this situation does not recur. My plan for achieving future academic success includes continuing regular sessions with my psychotherapist and implementing strategies for better time management and organization. These steps are designed to prevent anxiety flare-ups and enhance my ability to manage stress related to academic demands effectively.
I hope this petition is met with understanding and consideration of the extraordinary circumstances that affected my academic performance in PHAR 380. I am committed to learning from this experience and taking all necessary steps to ensure my academic success moving forward.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Armita Dabirzadeh
