Petition Letter
Dear Sir/Madam:
I was placed on Academic Probation effective 2015-05-21. The purpose of this letter is to request an appeal in respect of three courses where grades were awarded following the 2015 Winter term, as follows:
¿¿ GNDS 125 ¿¿ Appeal to drop course past the academic deadline (Grade F would become ¿¿DR¿)
¿¿ PHIL 115 ¿¿ Appeal to drop course past the academic deadline (Grade F would become ¿¿DR¿)
¿¿ SOCY 122 ¿¿ Appeal for Credit standing in a course (Grade C- would become ¿¿CR¿)
The basis of my appeal is that my 2014-2015 academic performance was significantly undermined by extenuating circumstances beyond my control. During 2014-15, I was diagnosed with and treated for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I first noticed symptoms of ADHD in the 2014 Fall term, but did not get a diagnosis until the Christmas holidays. In the first part of 2015, I began prescription medication for ADHD, which proved unsatisfactory. I subsequently was prescribed a different medication. I continue to explore different medications and other coping techniques. I enclose an Off-Campus Physician¿¿s Note from Dr. Yolles in support of this appeal. The result was that for most, if not all, of my first year at Queen¿¿s, I found myself unable to study effectively, remain focused in class, organize my academic affairs, or perform to the best of my abilities on tests, exams, and assignments, especially ones that were time limited or which entailed unusual stress.
I have already met with a Queen¿¿s Academic Advisor, and I am committed to doing everything in my power to achieve academic success in 2015-16 and beyond. I am continuing to seek treatment for my ADHD and expect to be able to manage it more effectively in future, possibly with some assistance or accommodation if/as recommended by Queen¿¿s Health, Counselling and Disability Services. I also intend to repeat HLTH 102 (Grade D+) with a view to achieving a better result. Finally, I am also considering taking an on-line course this summer (WRIT 120), in the hope of bolstering my GPA further.
Although this is not how I had hoped to begin my academic career at Queen¿¿s, I do hope that you will look upon these appeals favourably. I do not expect these extenuating circumstances to persist, and I look forward to better results in the years ahead. If you require anything further to properly assess these appeals, please let me know.
Yours very truly,
