Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to discuss dropping my psyc236 and fren231 classes. I have endured constant harassment from my roommate this semester which has greatly affected my mental health to the point I struggle to leave my bed. My mental health has affected my academic performance as my brain is in constant fight or flight at home.
My roommate first started the harassment online where she would call me vulgar names. This harassment increased to the point she had cut the cord of my toaster. I had to then put a lock on my door so she did not destroy any of my other property. This resulted in me keeping all of my personal belongings in my room instead of using the rest of the house like normal. Another thing she said she would do was put crickets in my food and nair in my shampoo. A month later I found crickets in my flour while making pancakes and needed to throw out all of my flour. Additionally, I had to spend the rest of my afternoon sifting through the rest of my ingredients in my pantry to make sure there were no more crickets. I decided to keep my hair care in my room knowing she might do something, but I do believe she would have tainted with it as well.
One of the major things she has accused me of this semester is killing her grandpa who I have never met. It was an unfortunate situation where her grandpa fell and was showing her the injuries on call when I accidentally unplugged the wifi instead of my toaster because it was in the morning and I was tired. When she called back he said he was ok and didn't need help, but a week later he ended up passing away. She was relentlessly blaming me for his death saying she would sue me for wrongful death even though I did not unplug the wifi on purpose.
I have talked to both my landlord and the police at this time. Since we had signed a conjoined lease she could not be kicked out of the house without evicting the entire house. Discussing options with the police they advised me I can charge her with harassment between the online posts, the threats, and the crickets I have a case against her. I have not yet taken that route because she will still not be kicked out after being charged so I feared for my safety as she has gotten more aggressive over time. I have been offered a place to stay from friends which I could couch surf till the end of the semester while going through the process of charging her, but I am too mentally drained to live that way right now.
I have been putting up with horrible allegations being made about me since December of this academic year. I have past trauma from a toxic household where this situation has made healing ten times worse. I no longer feel safe making mistakes around people for fear it will ruin my life. I have isolated myself in hopes of causing no further unintended harm. This makes going to class challenging because I am scared to talk to others and say something wrong on accident as all my words have been twisted or used against me for months. I also cannot handel further disappointment so grades have given me confidence issues because I see them as a reflection of myself. I have tried to talk to a counselor in terms of my mental health but I am scared my roommate will hear me talking about my issues in my room as Queens does not have many in-person appointments available.
To avoid the further disappointment I stopped putting effort into my work because when I put in the effort I had left in me and still did not receive the grade I thought I deserved I felt like more of a failure reiterating what everyone around me was already saying.
Overall in the midst of contacting the police, the school, my landlord, living in constant anxiety, and enduring the harassment, my grades have slipped. I had lost friends, and the friends that stayed could not handel being associated with my situation closely because it affected their mental health so I have felt very alone. There is so much more I have endured, but cannot be said in only 800 words. At this time all I want to do is be home with my family and support system and am very willing to do summer school to make up for these credits.
Sincerely,
Ty Johnson
