Petition Letter
Dear Office of the Dean Dr. Barbra Crow,
I am writing to you to submit this petition to drop my course: CHEM 326, as I have missed the drop deadline due to the following extenuating circumstances related to my mental health diagnoses, beyond my control, posing mental health challenges as follows:
-I have been recently diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and depression and I have been consumed by the management of my conditions
-I have been recently put on new medication to help me better manage my ADHD, Anxiety, and Depression symptoms and I am still getting used to these medications to function properly, unfortunately, the medication is not effectively working at this time
-This often results in my loss of focus, attention, organization, prioritizing tasks, task completion, and overall affects my ability to meet deadlines
-I am often overwhelmed which results in task paralysis and thus not being able to complete work on time because of the overwhelming thoughts that get my mind too cloudy.
-Unfortunately, due to my mental health issues, and lack of ability to accurately manage my priorities, time, tasks, and focus, I initially thought I could complete the course with positive results. I was under the impression that medication would help me to manage, so I registered for 5 classes, due to a false sense of security expecting that I would also be given medication for my ADHD symptoms. I did not get the ADHD medication until close to the end of the semester.
-At this time, it is apparent to me, that I can not complete this elective course, as I expected to complete. Without the right medication and dosage, at the onset of the semester, my mindset could not fully handle taking 5 courses. In hindsight, I now realize, that I was focusing on my required coursework first, leaving me overwhelmed and unable to focus on the elective class that I am seeking to drop.
Furthermore, I sought help for several months from Student Wellness Services, due to my symptoms. It took over one year to get the psychological evaluation and mental health services needed to start my medication. It has impacted my studies and further added stress to my mental health. I do have a mental health therapist, for whom, I have been receiving professional mental health counseling services, privately during this time, because of my symptoms and having to wait for help from the Student Wellness Services. Unfortunately, she could not prescribe any medication because she is not a medical doctor; although she is a psychotherapist/mental health practitioner. Attached to my petition is a letter from my therapist helping to support my appeal. If you have any further questions about the details please reach out to my therapist: Prof. Tommie A. Colin, LPC. Psychotherapist/Counselor Therapist/Mental Health Practitioner at thecounselortherapist@gmail.com. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
