Petition Letter
To Associate Dean (Academic)
I am petitioning to late drop the following courses:
Fall 2022: PHIL-153, ENGL-421
Winter 2023: ENGL-356B, ENGL 446, PHIL 316
Fall 2023: CLST-201, ENGL-433
Winter 2024: PHIL 332
In Fall 2022, I was managing my academic responsibilities and communicating with my professors. Unfortunately, I experienced a negative life event in November 2022, which led to me experiencing a mental health crisis. (Please see attached medical documentation from my family doctor.) This event caused me to be unwell and negatively impacted my ability to participate as a student. I had submitted a request and been granted academic consideration for this period, and was in contact with my professors about completing the course requirements. Unfortunately, early in the Winter semester, a second event happened that exacerbated the crisis that I was dealing with. At this time I reached out to Student Wellness Services for support. Though I was working with multiple professionals at Student Wellness, as well as with my QSAS advisor, I continued to experience adverse life events which significantly detracted from my ability to participate in my courses. Due to the circumstances I had been experiencing and my poor mental health, it was difficult for me to figure out what I should do or get the right supports in place. This resulted in me not passing three of my courses. I successfully completed the other course I was taking, due to the timing and structure of the course, and the nature of the deliverables.
In fall of 2023, due to a combination of adverse life events and mental health challenges, I was unable to complete CLST 201 and ENGL 433. (Please see documentation from Student Support Services.) When the drop deadline passed, I had no reason to think that I would be unable to complete the remaining coursework, as the events occurred shortly afterwards. For the other courses I was enrolled in, I was able to negotiate a plan for me to complete any outstanding work by the end of this semester.
During the Winter 2024 semester, I continued to experience residual affects of past events, making it not possible for me to be successful in PHIL 332. Therefore, I am requesting to late drop this course as well.
I am accessing support from multiple health care providers at Student Wellness Services. I am planning to work with Student Academic Success Services for academic support. I am also working with my QSAS advisor. Hopefully, I will be able to complete my studies in the 2024/2025 school year.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
