Academic Plan
Moving forward (Course of Study):
If I am allowed to return to Queen’s in the fall, I would like to continue my degree in the Faculty of Arts and Science, but I would like to alter my focus (in second year) to Film and Media, particularly Media and Performance Production (MAPP).
In April, I accompanied a peer to her Film and Media lecture, and she toured me through the Isabel Bader Centre. I also accompanied her to an information session about the program and felt it would be better for me. At this point, I was actively making a new path forward. I have also researched other first-year courses that I would succeed in, such as ARTH 120 and GEOL 102. In addition to researching a new program of study and first-year courses, I attended the “Academic Comeback Workshop” (Zoom – June 12th).
Why Film and Media Productions:
I have always been interested in media production and am quick to learn various computer programs. This program will be a good fit for me as it offers courses that are of particular interest to me, such as Film 111 &112, where I will be able to study the progression of film to television and beyond. The program also offers hands-on assignments and practical application in the form of the opportunity to complete a practicum.
Strategies for Success:
Challenges I encountered in first year: Health, Anxiety, Avoidance
Skills Needed to Move Forward: Grit, Resilience, Accountability, Seek Help, Check Ego, Self-reflection.
Strategies to move forward:
• I have contacted a local counsellor in the Comox Valley, which I will be meeting with regularly to review and discover new tools to deal with my anxiety and avoidance issues.
• Consider a course reduction upon return to Queen’s (I would want to meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss this option and generate a plan).
• Meet with Academic Advisor and/or Student Accessibility Services to review my Psych. Ed for further recommendations as to what resources I can access at Queen’s.
• Participate in the Queen’s mentor program – having an experienced student to help guide me will be very helpful. (Upper-Year Peer Mentor Program -Student Experience Office)
• Connect with local and/or Queen’s counsellor when I return to school so there is no gap in mental support. (Student Wellness Services)
• Attend all classes and tutorials.
• Seek extra support from TA when needed.
• If needed, use the ASUS Peer Tutoring service.
• Take on-campus workshops: exam prep/study habits.
• Review my academic plan regularly to adjust and ensure I am doing what is needed.
Thank you for reviewing my appeal. I genuinely know that if I am permitted to return, I will find success at Queen’s
Sincerely,
Adelaide MacLeod
