Dear Jenn Stephenson,
I am writing to formally appeal my academic standing withdrawal effective May 1 2024, as outlined in the withdrawal notice dated May 24, 2024. Due to significant financial burdens and responsibilities resulting from being raised by a single, widowed mother, I faced substantial challenges that severely impacted my academic performance.
After my father's passing in 2016, my mother has been the sole provider for our family. Recently, she returned to school to improve our financial situation, which has placed additional strain on our already limited resources. The stress and pressure became a distraction from my obligations and priorities, significantly hindering my ability to focus on my coursework, leading to my current academic standing.
The emotional stress of coping with financial instability, along with the added responsibilities and pressure at home greatly affected my ability to concentrate on my studies. As a result, I found myself feeling depressed, comparing my situation to my peers and struggling to find motivation to manage my time effectively, falling behind in my coursework, which ultimately led to failing grades in my Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, and Calculus classes. Specifically, these challenges affected my performance throughout the Spring 2024 semester, with the most significant impact occurring from January to April 2024.
With these difficulties, I did not take action to address my situation. Although I knew greatly of the counseling services Queen’s provides and advocates for, which help better manage stress and students schedules, I thought I was supposed to do this all by myself. I have now consulted with academic advisors to develop a realistic academic plan, along with reconnecting in my volunteer work with children experiencing grief. My further research includes a goal to attend workshops on time management and seeking ongoing counseling support I need.
Attached to this letter are documents that provide further context and evidence of my situation. To ensure my future success, I have developed a realistic academic plan, following the guidelines provided in the
