Academic Plan
Academic Plan
Phase 1:
If my petition is successful, I plan to ask to voluntarily withdraw from my studies for the next academic
year. During this year I plan to:
- Continue with regular consultations with my family doctor to monitor my progress with the new
medications that have been prescribed.
- Continue with regular psychotherapy recommended by my doctor, to address my depression.
- Engage with an ADHD specialist to map out strategies to support my learning when I return to
Queen’s.
- Engage in a regular program of physical activity, again to support and bolster the medication
and therapy treating my depression and ADHD.
- Search out learning opportunities within the community around time management, organization
and managing multiple priorities. Prior to engaging in any of these learning opportunities, I
would consult with an Academic Advisor to ensure it doesn’t have an impact on my admission
status.
- Pursue part-time employment to ensure I have sufficient resources to return to studies.
- Continue to be open with my family and friends about any struggles or challenges that I
encounter and ask for assistance and support when I need it.
Phase 2:
Following the year away from academics, when I return to Queen’s I plan to implement the following:
- Reducing my courseload so that I am not undertaking a full course load each term. I will
determine exactly what that looks like closer to the time, and in consultation with the Queen’s
resources which will be available to me at that time (QSAS, SASS, etc.).
- Re-evaluate my Academic Accommodation Plan, with input from my doctor and the counsellors
I will have seen over the year away, as well as the QSAS counsellors.
- Re-engage with the Academic Advisor on a regular basis, for support in the implementation of
my Academic Plan.
- Re-take the core and mandatory courses necessary for my degree.
- Consider moving from a B.A. Honours program to the B.A. program, which will reduce the
number of courses needed for graduation. This would also be discussed with a Career
Counsellor and Academic Advisor.
- Set up regular meetings with my professors and teaching assistants and be open and frank in
identifying challenges I am experiencing and asking for help when necessary.
- Engage a peer mentor through SASS, to support me in setting goals and identifying helpful
resources.
- Take the courses that are offered though the Learning Commons and Writing Centre, including
time management, study skills and exam preparation to provide me with a better foundation of
skills needed to succeed at the university level.
- Re-engage with the on-campus therapy provided by Student Wellness Services. This would be in
addition to the therapy recommended by my doctor.
- Consult with a Career Counsellor to help identify where I am headed with my studies in terms of
a career and any adjustments I might need to make to support this career path.
- Continue to be open with my family and friends, so they can continue to support me in
implementing the elements of this plan.
