Petition Letter
Hello,
My name is Kaitlen Anderson, a second year student at Queens University. I am submitting an appeal to have the 1 year requirement to withdraw from studies withdrawn due to extenuating circumstances; I have varying forms of documentation in order to support these circumstances, including a reference note from my therapist of two years, as well as a letter from Barbra Lotan, whom provided me with assistance after experiencing sexual assault at queens university in my first year. In my first few months at Queens University, I was unfortunately a victim of on campus sexual violence, in particular, I was sexually assaulted by my neighbour in Chown residency. Due to the proximity of my assaulter, the months after my assault I was confined to my residence out of fear of an interaction with the assaulter, who was not only in my program but in most of my classes. this, accompanied by the feelings associated with the trauma of my event, resulted in a difficult year on my mental health, and unfortunately my acccidemics. As is clear in my transcripts, my gpa was very low in my first year at Queens University, with a particular class in which I failed with a zero. over the summer, I reached out to my therapist, whom has since help me understanding my emotions towards the events and develop coping skills, though this took time, and unfortunately within my my second year at queens, I was hit with the memories of the events due to the environments I was frequenting. again, this caused me to fail a class. since then, my therapist and I have been meeting regularly on a weekly basis to ensure my coping skills are developed enough such that I may live in the environment of Queens without it triggering memories of the trauma. Since committing to therapy, my grades have increased drastically and I believe they will continue to go up consistently. Unfortunately, these two failing grades are very difficult to recover from and in turn, have also contributed to the university requiring me to withdraw. I believe that the references I have, in combination with the drastic increase in grade points will be a clear indication that I am not a bad student, but rather a student who had a bad thing happen to her and needed the time to learn how to cope. Now that I have had that oppertunity, I would like to continue my journey towards bettering my GPA while ion attendance at the university in the 2025 year.
